Why Standard Spelling Matters
Bengali follows the Bangla Academy standard spelling. In the NTRCA Preliminary exam you usually pick the correct spelling or correct sentence out of four options.
Main Spelling Rules
The short i and long i, and short u and long u, follow Sanskrit rules in Sanskrit-origin words: ashirbad, nishith, muhurto, dhurto and urdho. After the sounds ri, r and sh within one word, the letter n usually becomes the retroflex n: pronam, porinam, trino, kripon, borno. After a vowel other than a or aa, a suffix s usually becomes sh: nishedh, obhishek, bishom. For time words, purbahno and oporahno use the retroflex n, while moddhahno and shayahno use the plain n. Conjunct letters should be checked carefully: akankkha, ujjwal, santwana, shomichin, porichchhonno and sonnyasi. The correct form is uporjukto, from upori plus ukto; uporokto is not treated as standard.
Commonly Tested Correct Spellings
Ashirbad, santwana, muhurto, akankkha, uporjukto, shomichin, nishith, dhurto, ujjwal, bytikrom, mumurshu and kritogyota.
Common Mistakes in Sentences
Redundancy: do not write both shokol and gon together, as in "shokol chhatrogon". Write "shokol chhatro". Guruchandali dosh: do not mix formal (shadhu) and colloquial (cholito) styles in one sentence. Double plurals: write "onek lok" instead of "onek lokjoneraa". Gender and number must agree: a learned man is bidwan and a learned woman is biduushi.
Shortcut
Eliminate wrong options by checking conjunct letters first, then short and long vowels, then the retroflex n after r.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Why is 'shokol chhatrogon' wrong?
Solution: Both shokol and gon show plural, so the meaning is repeated. This is a redundancy error (bahulyo dosh). The correct form is shokol chhatro.
Example 2: Why is 'uporokto' not standard?
Solution: The correct sandhi is upori plus ukto, which gives uporjukto, so uporjukto is the standard form.
